You have two assignments this week.

Post about the person you respect most or your favorite story or movie. Include a picture if possible. (If you are writing about a family member, you may not have any pictures.) Also include a link to a site about the person, story or movie. For instructions on making links, use the handout.

In a different post, copy and paste the biography of someone you respect or a review of a story or movie that you like. Include a picture. IMPORTANT - You must include the address of where you found the biography or review. At the bottom of your post write Found at www.addressofthewebsite.com.

The person I respect most is Gandhi. Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement. He helped to take India away from the British and make it an Indian state. He did not use violence, but used peaceful protests and strikes. He was a peaceful man. For more information on Gandhi, look at this site.

When I was a child, my favorite story was Horton Hears A Who!. It is a book by Dr. Seuss and a cartoon on television. Horton is an elephant who finds a flower. Horton can hear someone talking inside the flower. There is a very small city on the flower full of tiny people. When he tells the other animals in the jungle, they don't believe him. They think he is crazy. They try to take away the flower and kill it. The people in the city must make a lot of noise so the animals can hear them and not kill them. It is a very funny story.

My favorite movie is Rear Window. The movie was directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1954. It is about a photographer with a broken leg who must stay in his flat. He is very bored and looks out of his window all the time. He thinks that one of his neighbors killed his wife and tries to find out if it is true. It is a scary movie.

Martin Luther King, Jr., was a great man who worked for racial equality in the United States of America. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. Both his father and grandfather were ministers. His mother was a schoolteacher who taught him how to read before he went to school. Young Martin was an excellent student in school.
After graduating from college and getting married, Dr. King became a minister and moved to Alabama. During the 1950's, Dr. King became active in the movement for civil rights and racial equality. He participated in the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott and many other peaceful demonstrations that protested the unfair treatment of African-Americans. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. Commemorating the life of a tremendously important leader, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day each year in January.

In the USA we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. Families usually go to the park and have a barbeque. We eat burgers and hot dogs. After the barbeque, we watch fireworks. It is a fun day because we can visit with our family and friends.

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for everything that we have. On Thanksgiving, my family has a huge lunch. We eat turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, bread and cranberry sauce. Everybody in my family will attend - uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents. After we eat, the men usually watch American football and the women clean the dishes. It's a great day.

My Nepal Pictures

Katmandu

Katmandu is the capital of Nepal. It is a very interesting city. There are lots of temples and markets and the people are very friendly. I stayed here for three days.

The temples in Katmandu are ancient, they were built between the 13th and 17th centuries. The architecture is different than modern buildings. _________________________________________________

Many of the markets in Katmandu are on the street. You can buy fruit, vegetables, rugs, clothes, masks, wooden statues. The markets are always crowded and busy.

Cars, motorcycles and bicycles drive right through the marketplace so you have to be careful where you walk. _______________________________

There are a lot of monkeys in Katmandu.

The city of Katmandu is not very big, but there is a lot to see. The only thing that I didn't like was the traffic and the pollution.

Bhaktipor

Bhaktipor is a small city about an hour from Katmandu. It is an ancient city, almost all the buildings are more than 200 years old. From Bhaktipor, you can see the Himalaya Mountains. It's a great place to take pictures or shop.

The Himalayas are the highest mountains in the world. Mount Everest is the highest mountain and is in Nepal. The mountains are covered with snow for the entire year. They are very beautiful, especially in the morning and evening.

Patan

Patan is a city that is very close to Katmandu. It also has many ancient buildings. I ate lunch in a very old building with an interesting view of the main square.

There are many different ways to enjoy holidays.

Some people enjoy going to the beach. People who like the beach usually enjoy swimming. They also may want to go diving, sailing or surfing. If you like staying at the beach, you might like going to Koh Samet, Bali or Goa.

Some people like going to the mountains. In the mountains they can hike and relax. They may enjoy snow-skiing or bird-watching. People who like the mountains will enjoy going to the Andes, the Himalayas or the Grand Tetons.

Some people like going to the desert. In the desert, they can camp, barbeque and ride camels. They also may enjoy sand surfing or driving on the dunes. People who like the desert can visit Liwa, Huachachina or Death Valley

Some people like visiting big cities during their holidays. They enjoy shopping and people-watching. They may also want to visit the parks, the museums and the theatre. People who like big cities will probably like Dubai, New York or Singapore.

Some people like staying at home. They enjoy spending time with their families, cooking and eating big meals, watching TV and relaxing. Sometimes people stay at home during their holiday to work on special projects, such as painting the house or redecorating.

Task One: Grammar Spotlight.

Here we have two verbs together. The second verb is sometimes in the -ing form and sometimes it is in the infinitive, e.g. to retire, to drive.

Jan and Leone Forster have been travelling for two months, watching the world go by from the windows of their motor-home. The fifty-five year old South Africans decided to retire early because they prefer being on the move to sitting behind a desk. They want to drive around the world. When they stopped off in the UAE last week, they had already travelled 20,000 kilometers in their “retirement cottage”.

The ‘cottage’ is a converted motor-home. It has all the things you need for a long journey including a special water filter system, which makes all water safe to drink. Inside it is just like a home with a lounge, dining room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a tiny bathroom. There is a fridge, freezer, TV, CD player, radio and microwave oven. A table converts to a bed and there is even a shower in the bathroom.

Before he retired, Jan worked in a factory that makes motor homes. When he retired, he bought a motor-home for himself. Leone was a financial information librarian for an international company. They both love travelling. “We travel whenever we can,” says Leone. “Twenty years ago, we took a long trip to South America with our daughters when they were four and six years old. And we often travel through southern Africa.

The Vorsters began their present journey from Johannesburg, South Africa, their hometown. They drove on to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. From Djibouti they took a ship to Yemen. They then moved on to Oman before driving into the UAE.

Jan and Leone were impressed with the Gulf countries. “We saw a spectacular camel race in Al Ain and enjoyed a great sunset in Muscat harbour. We like Dubai very much – excellent roads, very clean city, lovely parks and museums and a very interesting mix of people,” they told the Gulf News.

On the road, each of the Vorsters has their own duties. “Jan drives and keeps the vehicle going. I look at the scenery,” laughs Leone. Actually she does a lot more than that. She takes photographs, writes a daily diary and enters a report of each country on her laptop. The Vorsters also send a regular newsletter home to their friends.
